About a year ago, I had the opportunity to hear the founder of The Blessing Basket Project speak about her organization and how she started it. This non-profit pays women in third world countries to weave baskets and then sells the baskets in the U.S. While this idea itself isn’t new, The Blessing Basket Project gives substantially more back to the weavers than most organizations do, in fact they guarantee 2.5 times Fair Trade wages. The results of this effort are truly amazing as some women have moved on from basket weaving to become entrepreneurs and work to end poverty in their villages. Read more about this non-profit at http://www.blessingbasket.org/ and consider purchasing a basket for yourself or a friend.

About
Welcome to CoolNonProfits.Org. Each week, this website will feature a cool non profit (or not-for-profit) organizations that are really making a difference in the world. My goal is to have information on at least 30 non-profits by the end of 2009 and really help get the word out about these organizations. I’d also like to see 4,000 hours of community service and $500,000 given to these organizations.

Wonderful to hear the women breaking out into their entrepreneurial businesses. Perhaps they move into using micro loans such as Kiva.org. This would be a great transition for them. Evidence suggests women may be the key to ending poverty for their families. Ray, great website, I’m letting as many people know about it as I can.
